Electronic Copy: Engage Summer Internship Application

Application Deadline: Applications accepted on a rolling basis with the FINAL DEADLINE as May 15. You will be contacted about scheduling an interview. Applicants will be informed of final decisions by May 18.

Internship Dates: May 28 – July 15

Location: The KI EcoCenter, 158 W. 28th Street, Indianapolis, IN

About KI EcoCenter: The KI EcoCenter sees its work as that of human transformation. They strive to provide an environment and opportunities for individuals to bring forth the best within themselves, to constantly develop and enhance their abilities, to take responsibility for their own transformation and to make positive contributions to the community. KI engages their urban, working-class, predominantly African American neighborhood in the movement for social justice and environmental sustainability, through youth development, green initiatives, and community empowerment. KI runs an alternative community taught school, KI NuMedia, a media and marketing social enterprise driven by young adults, and food initiatives, including urban gardens, an aqua-ponics operation, and composting.

About Engage and the Convergence: Engage is a network of students, educators, and community organizers who work to transform learning experiences into lifelong connections and cooperative action between peoples and social movements working for a just and sustainable world. Each summer Engage organizes a “Convergence” to bring together members of the network in a city where its members are particularly active. The Convergence is a tool to build energy, share learning, and do projects in collaboration with community based organizations.

Internship Description: This year’s convergence is focused on supporting KI’s food justice projects, aimed at building local ownership and empowerment in food production, preparation, and education. Convergence participants will be split into three project groups to focus on different facets of KI’s community engagement around food issues. You and a team of two other Engage Interns will be expected to commit a minimum of 30 hours/week to fulfill the following responsibilities:

  • Work with KI youth to go door-to-door to get community feedback on interests and needs around gardening and composting projects.
  • Use this information to develop community projects that Engage members will jump into and complete during the four days of the Convergence.
  • Communicate with the Engage Network and Convergence participants about the community projects they will engage in.
  • Serve as a member of the local Convergence Planning Committee

During and Post-Convergence

  • Coordinate one Convergence project group.
  • Document stories and project and interview participants and residents
  • Turn stories into promotional/educational materials for KI and Engage
  • Plan and facilitate a meeting of local residents to plan next steps for continuing food projects.

Compensation: KI EcoCenter will provide interns with housing, meals, and transportation to and from KI. We will provide a modest stipend, but would recommend that current students check with their university to see if they offer additional stipends for summer internships. Interns would also have the option of looking for part-time work in addition to the internship.

Application Deadline: Applications accepted on a rolling basis with the FINAL DEADLINE as May 15. You will be contacted about scheduling an interview. Applicants will be informed of final decisions by May 18.
